Our Old House

One Family's Journey Through a Kitchen Remodel

In the summer of 2004 my partner Fran and I decided that it was time to do something for the kitchen of our 96 year old home. We had wanted to demolish the kitchen as soon as we bought the house. Instead we listened to advice from friends and remodel books and decided that we would live with the kitchen in order to see what it was about the kitchen that did not work for us. We hoped that we would get some ideas about how we would like to change those "problems."

In end we decided that the old kitchen had a disruptive traffic flow. There was no way out of the house with a major fisturbance to anyone cooking. Second, we wanted a place to eat. We also wanted to be able to entertain in the kitchen. Finally, we needed more storage.

This site is the story (in words and images) of our quest to solve the problems that we identified with the house. I'll share stories about what has gone well, what has not gone well and what I've learned as the owner-builder of this transition in our house.
